Trauma and EMDR Therapy

Trauma is an experience where the brain's coping system is overwhelmed with information and is unable to make sense of what has happened. Trauma can be the result of a single event or repeated events. When we experience trauma information is stored differently in the brain than in normal less activating events. The information is stored as sensations and emotions that are separate from the story of what happened. The emotions and sensations can be triggered by daily actions and the brain responds as if the trauma were happening all over again. EMDR helps to organize this information about trauma and make sense of it so the brain is able to store the information in a more organized manner. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movement, tapping, pulsing or sound to hold awareness of the past event in the present time where safety is experienced while processing the trauma. The basic premise of EMDR is that like our bodies, the brain has a natural ability to process and heal. EMDR activates the brain's natural abilities.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Tracie James Counseling is happy to be offering Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy in conjunction Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners to clients who meet the criteria for treatment.  Ketamine is an anesthetic that in smaller doses creates a euphoric or psychedelic trance state that utilizes and enhances the brain’s neuroplasticity and innate power for healing.  This trance-like state allows for processing and metabolizing of traumatic material stuck in the subconscious.  Ketamine is prescribed by the PMHNP and self-administered in Tracie’s office with the therapist present to assist with the integration of what is experienced.  In studies, KAP is shown to be an effective treatment for depression, PTSD, and substance use.  Tracie uses EMDR, Internal Family Systems Therapy and Person-Centered approaches to assist clients with integration.  Ketamine sessions can be completed typically within two hours.
